One of the smallest, nicest country shows..........

The Simonside Country Fair, which always takes place on the second Sunday in August (August 12th 2007 this year), is one of the smallest and nicest shows Northumberland. Since the first show took place in 1985, run then as now by a committee of local residents drawn from the isolated farms and hamlets within a few miles radius of Forestburngate, it has amply carried out its principal aim - of raising money to donate to local charities and organizations.

Last year’s Fair in 2006 was a great success in spite of a rainy start. Everyone remained undeterred by the minor matter of the weather and got on with the business in hand! Visitors enjoyed traditional Cumberland wrestling with youngsters taking part as well as more experienced contestants. There were plenty of activities for children such as the novelty dog show, sports, craft competitions, fancy dress and a lively tug of war. Older visitors cast a professional eye over the sheep and terrier shows and tried their hands at shooting and stick dressing. There were countryside and agricultural displays to enjoy, hearty afternoon teas and of course a good ‘crack’ with old and new friends in the refreshment tent. A steel band greeted the soggy fell runners with a tremendous fanfare as they arrived back in the main ring following their exertions over hill and dale in the annual Fell Run.

The show committee hope that their 2007 efforts will be enjoyed as much as or even more than previous years. They promise a few surprises as well as all the traditional events and cordially invite visitors of all ages from 12 noon onwards at Forestburngate by “The Gate” pub south of Rothbury. Admission and parking by donation to the show fund.
